Barley Grass has long been used as a health supplement and is a good source of many nutrients, including fiber, polyphenols, flavonoids, potassium, and vegetarian forms of vitamins A, C, and K. While there are limited human studies available the data suggests that it may benefit cardiovascular health and blood sugar regulation.
Ashwagandha (aśvagandhā): Arguably the most famous Āyurvedic herb in the West, ashwagandha’s name means “scent of a horse.” This name implies the strength and power of a horse and modern bio-research notes ashwagandha’s capacity to support adrenal health by helping the body to regulate cortisol levels and by extension stress, sleep, concentration, mood and energy levels. Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body adapt to stress. To learn more about ashwagandha, follow this link here.
Astragalus: Possibly the best immune-supporting herb in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Pharmacopeia and, after 25 years of using astragalus clinically, I can say from experience that astragalus is especially effective in preventing and treating viral infections. It is also helpful in building blood, supporting better heart & kidney function and deficiency patterns in digestion. I used it extensively with my children during cold and flu season and I can brag that in 22 years of parenting neither of them has ever taken antibiotics. For a deeper understanding of astragalus, read this article here.
Moringa: This warming, mustardy tasting plant is native to India and traditionally used in the colder months of the year as a general tonic for health and energy levels. Besides being nutrient and antioxidant rich, limited human studies have suggested that it may contribute to regulating cholesterol and blood sugar levels and reducing inflammation in our systems.
Schizandra Berry: Schisandra chinensis (five flavor fruit) is a fruit-bearing vine. Its purple-red berries are described as having five tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, and sour. In TCM, schizandra berry is used to prevent colds and flus and fortify a weakened immune system. Currently schizandra berry is very popular in herbal anxiety and sleep formulations which reflects its traditional property of “calming spirit.” Learn more here: healthline: Schisandra
Tulsi: Also known as Holy Basil, tulsi is considered to have the following qualities in Āyurveda: warming, clarifying, supporting lung health and the flow of prana. Additionally, tulsi is an adaptogen, which means it helps with stress prevention and recovery, weight regulation, mental clarity, preventing exhaustion and burnout. Read more about tulsi here.
Talisadi is one of the foundational immune formulas for the colder months. It combines cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, long pepper, and talisa (a species of bamboo) to primarily protect the lungs and to reduce all three doshas in the head and chest. It also acts to promote the strength of the digestive fire. It anchors our wintertime formula.
Lemon Balm: A member of the mint family like Tulsi, Lemon Balm is traditionally employed as an antiviral herb and digestive tonic. Its mildly cooling properties help to balance the warming herbs in formulas like talisadi and single herbs like moringa and ashwaganda.
Bentonite Clay: People have been using calcium bentonite clay for centuries as a way to detoxify the body, improve digestion, improve skin tone and enhance the mineral nourishment in food. For a deeper dive look here.
Licorice Root: In addition to its stomach soothing properties, licorice is used in small amounts traditionally to harmonize the actions of the other ingredients so that a formula is easier to digest. It also has a mildly sweet and bitter taste that makes herbal compounds more enjoyable. Read more about licorice here.
